This are by far the best things you've done so far, nailing these down. (not saying the rest isn't good, but these are spot on).
Like i said last night, when you get to the site, it would be great to start pinpointing these conditions around the site, to start identifying them so that you can use them later and draw us in to conversation.
mapping and documenting these conditions of edge etc. may a variety of things beside just taking photographs that say "this is what it looks like" you might also want photos that are about details, textures, people, "this is what it feels like" hand drawings, maps, scraps off the site? I don't know but I would get as much out of each visit as possible.
The more you can show us adviser types the better feedback we can give you.
WHICH REMINDS ME - You should definitely as Kate Wingert for some kind of letter explaining what your up to, just-in-case, it will also help you make head way with the peope your in contact with. They need to know your not politically or finacially motivated, and after that I'm sure they'd love to tell you everything your heart desires.
SO GET ON THAT LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY. Just because your not gonna know when your gonna need that but chances are you will, so instead of waiting get a letter, make copies and carry that kind of stuff on you, so if you get stopped by security you can explain exactly what your up to - studying for school, and here's your references.
Additionally, the best part about you picking a rail yard is like I said last night, a rail yard in redaing is probably alot like the rail yard in philly and here are two, it's a long address but if you copy and paste it it links you to a google map I made showing some prime rail yards within 20 minutes of campus:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?f=s&ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&ll=39.926852,-75.148888&spn=0.123479,0.255775&z=12&om=1&msid=100021743471866479889.00043e44be85a09b00022
If you want I can get you contact information for the guy who runs MusikFest in Allentown/bethlehem, they are currently designing a new brick-and-mortar home to be located in the steel works there, not unlike your potential program. He is a very talkative guy and could outline their hopes and dreams for the site...is it a potential program for you? that's a question you would need to answer.
I think you also really need to look at the needs & wants of your user group: is it the residents, the tourists? both? do you want to put all your eggs in the basket of tourism a'la bilbao? or are there responsiblities to the surrounding community as well? at least during the 'off season'?
Like i said i think there is another map the one that is the inverse of the rail yard, what do the communities feel like right at that edge condition? is there any energy that you can work with and link together to stregthen your site? (this is the same question Tim is dealing with - you ugys would be well off to talk with each other a bit about extended and intended sites)
The users question deserves some analysis as it will benefit continued discussion about program, use, and edges (theres' that word again).
Last item - Title - John brought up that preserving memories is not exactly what your after in the way you've presented and talked about the site, we've agreed it's not a steamtown thing, that IS preservation of memory, well ,that and a shopping mall. Work over the thesis statement and we will eventually get a "title" if we have to have one.
-keep truckin...err...training?
